Dear Hartford Pre-Kindergarten Families,

I am so excited to begin this new school year and to introduce and welcome a new Assistant Principal, Ms. Valerie Fenn.

Ms. Fenn comes to us from central office where she was Director of Intervention and led a high quality intervention team. Previously, she was an administrator in Cromwell and a teacher leader in East Hartford. Ms. Fenn brings many great skills and much enthusiasm for early childhood education to our school. We have been working collaboratively this summer to prepare for the new school year.

We also welcome two new teachers, Ms. Coronica Richardson and Ms. Crystal Hernandez. They will be joining our Pre-K 3 teaching staff. Both bring passion and an expertise in early childhood teaching and are an excellent addition to our family.

We are committed to ensuring each child is prepared for kindergarten success upon entry into one of a variety of theme based district magnet schools. Our school will provide a social learning environment that will nurture and support young children's natural proclivity to learn, experiment, and explore through active engagement in structured play, inquiry-based instruction, interactive discussions around play and literature and the fast mapping of vocabulary.

The play-based approaches that we implement in our classrooms will be shared with you, our families, through ongoing parent focused trainings to ensure the oral language and the vocabulary development within the school will filter into all areas of our students' lives outside of school as well.

I am so delighted that you and your children are a part of our exciting learning environment. The staff and I want to thank you for providing us with support and cooperation as we work together to ensure your children enter kindergarten prepared for success and enter their educational career with confidence.

A message from Ms. Fenn, Assistant Principal:

Dear Hartford Pre-Kindergarten Families,

It is with great pride and excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the recently appointed Assistant Principal of your school.   Along with the Prekindergarten staff, I will work hard to continue the success of providing three and four year children with rich learning experiences based on
language-rich instruction that draws from the STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) curriculum so that all children are academically and socially prepared to thrive in their kindergarten and life experiences. I am looking forward to maintaining strong relationships with parents, students, staff, and community partners to ensure the success of our students.

Students in pre-K 3 and pre-K 4 will experience education grounded in preschool standards and CREATE fostering a nurturing, safe environment for children. CREATE is our school mantra that stands for:

Celebrate Differences

be Respectful Learners

Explore our World

Act Safely

Think Critically

Exceed Expectations

I am also excited to inform you about some wonderful enhancements to the school. A new floor has been installed in the cafeteria/gymnasium/auditorium, a student bathroom has been added to the pre-K 4 wing, a new playground has been constructed in the school yard, and beautiful school signage prominently displays our school name and entrances on the outside of the building. We also have a brand new LEGO lab where students learn concepts and skills in meaningful contexts in a collaborative environment and a Movement Room to support the integration of educational, cognitive, psychological, physical, and development as outlined by Early Childhood and Connecticut Common Core standards.

Children and their families are encouraged to attend a meet and greet to visit classrooms and meet teachers on Monday, August 29th from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. prior to the first day of school on Tuesday, August 30th.

For children who might be a little apprehensive to come to school for the first time, I will be available on Thursday, August 18th from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Friday, August 19th from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. for families to visit the school with their child and meet me.  I welcome the opportunity to begin the year together and ease the transition of starting the school year!

We anticipate a successful year and appreciate your trust in the staff at the Hartford Pre-Kindergarten Magnet to provide an excellent academic and social learning environment for your child.

With CREATE Pride,

Valerie Fenn
